The ‘unique’ European town King Charles visits ‘every year’ is a ‘dreamy place’

It is reported King Charles will be spending some time in Romania, where he will meet President Klaus Iohannis at the Cotroceni Palace before heading to Transylvania.

Transylvania is known to be one of King Charles’s favourite retreats and as his friend Count Tibor Kalnoky explained on the Channel 4 series The Real Windsors: The Outspoken Heir, “Charles discovered this very unique corner of Europe and has been coming to this place every year”.

Count Tibor Kalnoky reportedly found a house in the small town of Viscri, Transylvania, for the then Prince Charles a few years ago.

He explained: “I showed him the place and he said it was everything he had been looking for. We spent some time renovating the whole thing.”

Charles then turned his 18th-century house in Viscri into a guest house and is now a restored UNESCO World Heritage site, so it is unknown where the King will be staying during his trip.

Count Tibor said: “Some people say it I like staying the night in a museum, other people say it is like travelling back in time.”

King Charles reportedly has a routine when visiting Viscri and enjoys the same drink “every night before dinner”. Count Tibor Kalnoky explained: “He likes a martini before dinner, that’s for sure.”

Where is Viscri?

Viscri is a very small village in Transylvania, just one hour and a half from the closest airport, Tirgu Mures. Britons can fly from London to Tirgu Mures Airport with Wizzair for under £50 this summer.

Transylvania is a region in central Romania, home to some of Europe’s oldest and prettiest castles, such as the famous Bran Castle, also known as the Dracula Castle.

The region is a very popular destination for hiking and skiing, but it also has a lot of history and beautiful medieval towns to visit.

The King reportedly likes to enjoy his summer breaks in the idyllic Eastern European spot where he spends time relaxing and enjoying the picturesque landscapes.

Is Viscri worth visiting?

Viscri is a very picturesque village and a perfect option for those who want to spend a relaxing holiday in the Romanian countryside. The town’s main attractions are the white fortified church of Saschiz and the Rupea Fortress.

Tourists can stay at the Prince of Wales Guesthouse, which is “beautifully restored and has a very peaceful atmosphere,” according to Tripadvisor users.

“The administrator is a sweet Romanian lady who takes care of everything and really makes you feel what the traditional Romanian hospitality really means. This is a dreamy place where you can unwind. Will definitely go back,” they explained.

Another visitor said that Viscri “is one the most beautiful villages in Transylvania,” and a third one commented: “A truly inspiring place to completely unwind and experience something special – delicious food, charming and well-appointed rooms and authentic Transylvanian architecture in a beautiful village!”
