Interiors by an Armani store designer and the largest glass panes ever built into a yacht: The stunning new entries in 2021’s biggest superyachts ranking revealed

  • Boat International magazine has unveiled its list of the world’s 101 largest superyachts for 2021
  • The list features five new entries, including the 140m (459ft), eight-deck Solaris, which sleeps up to 36 guests
  • The magazine says the new yachts set ‘new standards for design’ and show a trend for hybrid-propulsion

The 101 largest superyachts in the world for 2021 have been revealed – and the list features five enviable new entries.

Produced by Boat International magazine, which describes itself as the ‘global superyacht and luxury lifestyle authority’, the list ranks vessels by overall length.

The magazine says that the new entries on the list showcase a ‘growing trend for hybrid-propulsion systems’ and set ‘new standards for design’, which is not surprising considering one of them boasts interiors by Armani, Chanel and Louis Vuitton store designer Peter Marino and another features the biggest glass panes ever built into a yacht.

At 140m (459ft), $600million (£452million) Solaris is the largest new entry for 2021. This mammoth beauty, which is ranked 14th overall, features eight decks and sleeps up to 36 guests.

Glass played a key role in her construction. More than 2,000 square metres (21,527 square feet) of the material were used, including the largest panes ever built into a yacht.

According to Boat International, the glass has been put to particularly good use in the main deck pool where the transparent surface showcases the beach club below.

The panes are not the only yachting world-first to be found on Solaris. In addition to her eight MTU engines she is fitted with a twin ABB Azipod electric propulsion system with a combined output of 9MW – the largest system of its kind installed in a private yacht.

The second largest new entry to Boat International’s list of the world’s 101 largest yachts is 115m (377ft) Ahpo.

The second-largest new entry to Boat International’s list of the world’s 101 largest yachts is the 115m (377ft) Ahpo (pictured). Highlights of this ‘family focused’ yacht include a 200-square-metre (2,152-square-foot) owners suite, an 80-square-metre (861-square-foot) gym, and a wellness area with a pool that is filled with water warmed by the wasted heat captured from the generators

With a name that translates as Grand Lady, the $300million (£226million) yacht was designed inside and out by Nuvolari Lenard.

The other three new entries on the list are the $200million (£150million) 94.75m (310ft) Bliss, the $175million (£132million) 94m (308ft) Viva and 289m-long (289ft) Zen, all built by Dutch yard Feadship.

Boat International says that Bliss, which was designed by Studio de Voogt and Remi Tessier, was built with the mantra ‘leave no trace’ in mind.

Bliss also boasts a dynamic positioning system to ensure that she doesn’t damage the seabed when she drops anchor.

Other USPs of the yacht include a spacious swimming pool and a helideck that converts into a full sports and games deck.

Viva, meanwhile, has a design that Boat International describes as ‘almost architectural’.

Zen, the final new entry to the list of the world’s 101 largest superyachts for 2021, is shrouded in secrecy.

This image serves up a sneak peek of Project Y712, which is expected to be delivered in 2022. Reportedly commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, this 127m (416ft) vessel will become the largest sailing yacht in the world

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST SUPERYACHTS OF 2021

2. Eclipse – 162.5 metres (533ft)

3. Dubai – 162 metres (531ft)

4. Dilbar – 156 metres (511ft)

5. Al Said – 155 metres (508ft)

6. A+ – 147.25 metres (483ft)

7. Prince Abdulaziz – 147 metres (482ft)

10. Nord – 142 metres (465ft)

Very little is known about what the interiors look like because its stylists all signed a nondisclosure agreement.

As large as these new ships are they don’t quite make it into the top five section of the 101 largest superyachts list.

That list is topped by the 180.61m (590ft) Azzam, the 162.5m (533ft) Eclipse, the 162m (531ft) Dubai, the 156m (511ft) Dilbar and the 155m (508ft) Al Said.

With the 2021 list complete, Boat International is already looking forward to the 2022 edition, which looks set to be a bumper year for yacht building. Not least because it’s when Project Y712 will be delivered.

Reportedly commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, this 127m (416ft) vessel will become the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Other notable yachts to look out for will be the 107m (351ft) Lurssen explorer Northern Star III, in build for Canadian billionaire John Risley, and the largest ever Feadship, 118m (387ft) Project 1010.

Stewart Campbell, editor-in-chief at Boat International Media, said: ‘We’ve seen some truly special superyachts hitting the water this year. The standout must be 140-metre Solaris, built in Germany by Lloyd Werft. This new explorer yacht sets new standards for design, which is no surprise given the involvement of Marc Newson. In 2022, we’re expecting another bumper crop of large yachts to hit the water, including the largest sailing yacht ever built, 127-metre-long Project Y721, currently in build in the Netherlands.’

The full Top 101 list appears in the January issue of Boat International, on sale now.
