The Bachelorette fans will know the La Quinta Resort for hosting the show’s 16th season, but it’s long been a destination—so much so that the property is, in its estimation, one of only two hotels in the world to have a city named after it. Below, Dermot Connolly, the resort’s general manager, talks to T&C about its storied history.
Describe the hotel in one sentence.
The ultimate hideaway with a rich history, La Quinta Resort has been the desert destination of choice for Hollywood legends and icons of industry for over 90 years.
Which room is the best—and why?
Each guest room and villa have their own innate charm and fully embody resort-style living. However, the ultimate accommodation and largest suite at the resort is the El Presidente Suite, featuring 2,000 square feet of sweeping mountainous views, two fireplaces, a spacious backyard, pool, and hot tub. The retreat also includes a guest house, which is ideal for entertaining, unwinding and the ultimate in privacy. You might have spotted this suite featured on the recent 16th season of ABC’s The Bachelorette.
Who is your typical guest?
La Quinta truly has something for everyone. We cater to a wide range of guests, from families to couples, dining enthusiasts and girlfriend getaways. We tend to attract Southern California residents longing for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and interested in unwinding in our expansive desert oasis.

Many of our guests have been visiting for years, and are able to tell stories about their time spent here in their youth, and how much they enjoy sharing their experiences with their own children. La Quinta Resort is truly a multigenerational destination.
A day might consist of a round of golf on one of our championship golf courses or a game of tennis or pickleball, time at the spa or splashing around in one of our 41 climate-controlled pools. Not to mention, we are extremely pet friendly and love our four-legged guests!
Can you tell us about what precautions the hotel is taking amid the pandemic, to ensure that both guests and staff are safe?
La Quinta Resort has incorporated a variety of precautions amid the pandemic such as requiring all guests and staff on the property to wear a mask or protective face covering in all public spaces, contactless arrival with digital check-in and a digital key through the Hilton app—allowing guests to bypass the front desk altogether. The front desk has been reconfigured with signage to control traffic flow and maintain social distancing, too.
La Quinta has also implemented “Hilton CleanStay” with Lysol protection to deliver an industry-defining standard of disinfection and cleanliness in Hilton properties across the world. Our team members have been trained on these new elevated cleaning processes, including the new “Hilton CleanStay” room seal to indicate a room has not been accessed since being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. We also offer “knock and go” drop-off room service and flexible housekeeping options to keep both our guests and employees safe.
What is an interesting story about the hotel’s history?
It is said that movie star Bette Davis would often tell reporters “I’m off to La Quinta,” between scenes on the set of Jezebel, and that late movie Director Frank Capra referred to the property as ‘the kind of place everyone was looking for; it is a wonderful green oasis in the middle of the desert, and it is absolutely private.”
It is also said that after her first visit, La Quinta quickly became one of Greta Garbo’s favorite hideaways. Garbo and her companion, John Gilbert were known to be frequent guests of the hotel, leasing La Casa, a private home located next to the home of Hollywood’s first female director, Dorothy Arzner. Greta’s Hollywood hideaway has remained intact at the resort and is opened for visitors during the day. Garbo’s bed and pictures, her kitchen and her hall are still imbued with her magnetic presence. Garbo wasn’t the only celebrity to claim La Quinta as her hideaway. The resort is home to Dorothy Arzner’s luxurious former residence, the timeless Frank Capra Suite and the Eisenhower Suite.
