Britain has a bewildering number of options for spending a few nights amid timeless regal splendour, but help with narrowing the search is at hand thanks to Airbnb, which has unveiled its 10 most wish-listed UK castles.
The list comprises a gem in Cornwall in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, towers in Teignmouth lovingly restored over the past 11 years and a pile in Scotland that left one visitor awestruck.

It’s over to reviewer ‘Andrew’ for a summation of this historic four-bedroom abode: ‘Definitely five-star accommodation and more. Fiona and Michael are delightful hosts of a genuinely historic building that is so spacious and extremely comfortable for all generations. No.4 – The Tower, Thornton Castle, Aberdeenshire
This castle dates from the 13th century, with two bedrooms in the 16th-century tower wing available for B&B rental. The family use a separate wing of the house and the property has its own breakfast-egg supply chain thanks to the resident chickens and ducks in the garden. From £155 a night

The 12th-century property scores an average of 4.98 out of five across 64 reviews, with ‘Linda’ summing up the castle as ‘absolutely breathtaking’ and the scenery it sits in as ‘so beautiful’. ‘You’ll be in awe of the castle from the minute you arrive – the best Airbnb we have stayed in,’ she adds. Host Etsuko said: ‘As an Airbnb host, it’s fantastic to see guests enjoying the castle. It’s such a unique, historical building, and it’s wonderful that today it’s still filled with the laughter of families and friends.
