If you're searching for potential trips for the summer and in need of a true holiday experience, one Welsh town has lots on offer.

Those that haven't been to Llandeilo are missing out on some of the finest experiences anywhere in the country. It has the benefits of a quiet getaway spot, but it also has also the pleasures of staying in a town.

Llandeilo sits in the beautiful Welsh countryside, featuring a breathtaking view of its castle and the National Trust Park. However, it's still large enough to be filled with incredible shops and places that offer amazing food and drink.

The town also has a lot of historical charm, with the centre of the town being Saint Teilo’s church, named after the saint who gave his name to the Llandeilo.

According to legend, Saint Teilo established a monastic settlement there, which grew to be the town we have today.

Historical delights

No visit to Llandeilo is complete without a trip to Dinefwr Park. Walking distance from the town centre, it’s an 800-acre National Trust park with boardwalks and nature trails, a deer park, woodlands, and fields grazed by rare Welsh cattle that could have come straight from legend.

Perched at the highest point in the park is the impressive ruin of Dinefwr Castle, which has spectacular views of the Towy Valley. At the opposite is the more recent Newton House, a grand country home that’s now open to the public and includes a café and a shop.

Back in the centre of town, don’t miss the chance to visit the magical holy well set in the lane that runs along the lower edge of the churchyard. Toss a coin in and make a wish.

Eat

There is plenty to choose from in Llandeilo. If you want something special, head to The Cawdor, the upmarket hotel in the centre of town, while The Plough, on the outskirts of town, is a pub with a great food offering.

There are several good cafes, including The Hangout, a cool, hipster offering unexpectedly located in an industrial estate. Also on the edge of town, but a bit further in and therefore easier to reach on foot, is The Lounge, tucked behind the Davies & Co furniture shop on Station Road.

It’s a great place for simple, wholesome fare like soup or a quiche. Another must is Heavenly, a chocolate dessert and ice cream shop in the heart of town, which often (understandably) has queues outside.

Drink

Be sure to call into the Ginhaus, tucked down Market Street, a pedestrianised alley in the heart of town.

As its name suggests, it serves a huge selection of gins, but also offers great beers and wines too.

Its food offering, driven by its in-house deli, is also outstanding. The Cegin Cawdor in The Cawdor is another classy place to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by.

Shop

If you love boutiques, you’re in the right place. Clothing brand Toast originated locally and has a factory outlet in Llandeilo, and there are further clothing finds on the main street, including in Fountain Fine Art, which as its name suggests is also an art gallery.

If you love art, pay a visit to Oriel Mimosa too, which is just over the road from Fountain Fine Art and features some wonderful work by local artists. For cooks, Peppercorn, on King Street, is a joy: it’s packed with cool kitchenware and accessories.

Stay

For luxury, The Cawdor on Rhosmaen Street is hard to beat. A grand former coaching inn, its stylish room feature Hypnos beds, crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and beautiful Welsh-made accessories and toiletries.

As mentioned above, it’s a great place to eat and drink as well. The Plough in Rhosmaen on the edge of Llandeilo is another great choice, with stylish modern rooms, many of them with country views.
