Pick a city, any city: Southwest continues new flight binge, adds two more vacation spots

Southwest Airlines, continuing to cast about for pandemic passengers, is adding flights to two more vacation spots in May.

The nation’s largest domestic carrier plans to start service to Bozeman, Montana, a gateway to Yellowstone National Park, and Destin-Fort Walton Beach in the Florida Panhandle.

The airline usually adds one or two new destinations a year at most, and 2021 will now see at least 10 with the latest additions.

Like all airlines, Southwest is scrambling to lure passengers at a time when travel remains severely depressed. Vacation travel is slowly coming back, ahead of more lucrative business travel, and those who are traveling or planning to travel this summer and beyond seeking trips where they can spend a lot of time outside. 

The upshot for travelers: more choices and, typically, lower ticket prices.

Southwest’s new flights to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Southwest’s flights to and from Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, the airline’s 11th airport in Florida and third in the panhandle, begin on May 6.

The airline will fly between Destin-Fort Walton Beach and four of its major hubs: Baltimore/Washington; Dallas Love Field, Nashville and Chicago Midway. The Chicago service starts on June 6.

Southwest flights to Bozeman, Montana

Southwest’s flights to Bozeman, its first destination in Montana, begin on May 27. 

The airline will offer nonstop service between Bozeman and Denver and Las Vegas.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport: Service began Feb. 14

Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida: Service began Feb. 14

Savannah/Hilton Head: Service begins March 11

Colorado Springs: March 11

Houston Bush Intercontinental: April 12

Santa Barbara, California: April 12

Fresno, California: April 25

Destin-Fort Walton Beach: May 6

Bozeman, Montana: May 27

Jackson, Mississippi: June 6
