American Airlines will begin daily, nonstop service from Miami to the British Virgin Islands on June 1. The three-hour flight is the first nonstop U.S.-to-BVI route available since the 1980s, according to tourism officials in the BVI.
The last direct flight, also from Miami, was operated by the short-lived British Caribbean Airways, which ceased operations in October 1986.
The American flight will operate through Aug. 14 and then resume in November. Daily flights will depart Miami at 10:07 a.m. and arrive at Lettsome
Airport on Beef Island at 1:06 p.m. Return flights will depart at 1:47
p.m. and arrive at 4:25 p.m.
The new air service is expected to bring in an estimated 2,128 monthly passengers to the islands, according to Clive McCoy, director of tourism for the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board and Film Commission.
