The first day on a cruise can be daunting – especially if it’s your first time. With so many people to meet and things to do, the day can certainly get a little overwhelming. Reddit user u/ultraviolencebaby provided their best tips for ensuring the first day is as smooth as possible.
The Reddit user told fellow cruisers: “Tip your room steward $10-20 (aroud £9-18) right away and let them know your desires and preferences.”
Flight attendant turned TikTok star Cieraa Mist highlighted the importance of being generous with your attendant on board.
She admitted that a flight attendant gifted with “some Starbucks or a pack of chocolate” can work “miracles” – so there’s no harm in extending the same generosity to cruise workers.
Reddit user and fellow cruise lover Bill_Parker added: “Fat tip on day one is the best way to gain the favor of your Steward or Stewardess.”
If you don’t happen to get any special treatment due to this little tip, it’s also just nice to be nice.
The seasoned cruiser also recommend taking small change to tip porters who carry your bags, bartenders and excursion guides on your excursions.
Once you get to your room, the Reddit user suggested giving it a thorough once-over.
They advised: “Check your cabin is pristine. Test out the TV, lights, and the bathroom. Check for bed bugs and sanitize anything that you want to.”
Next, head to the Main Dining Room for lunch. Cruise Critic explained: “The main dining room and cruise ship buffet will always be included in your fare, though a few specialty items might cost extra.
“Most upscale or sit-down specialty restaurants incur an extra fee, either a flat cover charge or a la carte pricing per item.”
The Reddit user also advised cruisers to check out and download the cruiseline’s free app.
The app is there to make things a little easier and less overwhelming, with lots of information stored in one place.
Cruise.co.uk suggests: “As well as deciding how to make the most of all the amazing features and services onboard your ship and checking out the timetables for excursions, entertainment and activities, there’s also the essential travel information you need to be aware of for each country you visit.
“These apps can also help with booking tables at your favourite onboard restaurant or at the show you can’t wait to see, making things quicker and easier, so you don’t miss out.”
Cruises are usually far from cheap, so the next tip was all about how to secure freebies.
The cruise lover told holidaymakers: “Stop by a lot of welcome events and auctions because they may offer free drinks.”
Next, head up on deck for sail away before finding something to eat.
The cruiser recommended going to restaurants where you have to pay extra on embarkation day.
They explained: “There are offers that will give you a free bottle of wine or 50 percent off of any wine they have.” According to the cruiser, this is typical of Caribbean cruises.
The cruiser also offered a savvy tip for managing your time on early mornings during the cruise.
“If you have an early shore excursion, order room service the night before to be delivered to your room early.
“That way, you can eat while getting ready and you don’t have to worry about being late because of lines at the buffet. Same thing with disembarkation day.”
