Coronavirus keeping insurance company busy

Travel insurance companies have received a number of calls about the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Allianz has gotten around 200 calls and 1,000 claims as this week, said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications. Most of the claims are still under review, while some have been approved or denied. Many of the claims were denied because the reason cited for cancellation was fear of travel, not a covered reason.

Exactly what travel insurance covers depends on the policy itself, but right now, Allianz is refunding the cost of insurance if a supplier has canceled a trip due to Covid-19 or if an insured trip included a trip to China.

According to April Travel Protection, cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance, which comes with a higher premium than a standard insurance policy, is the only kind of policy that would enable a traveler to cancel a trip out of fear of coronavirus and its spread.

If insurance was purchased prior to Jan. 22, when coronavirus became a known event, it will cover trip interruption if the traveler contracts the virus as well as trip delay. It also includes emergency medical and transportation benefits.
