Three of the most popular lakes in Europe are in the UK. Lausanne Tourisme, a Swiss tourism board, looked at the most popular lakes and two of the top five are in Scotland.

The two top spots are unsurprisingly taking by Italian lakes.

Lake Como is number one and Lake Garda number two.

The third most popular lake is Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

But at number four and number five, two UK lakes make an appearance.

Loch Lomond is the fourth most popular lake in Europe.

The largest lake in Britain, Loch Lomond is part of the Trossachs National Park.

It is easily accessible, with 50 percent of Scotland’s population living within an hour’s drive of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Loch Ness is the fifth most popular lake in Europe.

Famous for its monster, Nessie isn’t the only thing remarkable about Loch Ness.

The lake is deeper than the North Sea and has more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.

The list of the most popular lakes in Europe is incredibly eclectic.

From Slovenia to Norway, France to Spain, lakes from all over are featured.

And at number 13, England’s only lake on the list appears.

Lake Windermere, in the Lake District, is popular enough to have beaten competition from the likes of Lake Annecy in France and Sognefjord in Norway.

The largest natural lake in England is one of the most popular places in the Lake District.

Visitors enjoy the beautiful surroundings and all the activities on offer.

Like most places in the Lake District, Lake Windemere has Beatrix Potter-related attractions.

Wray Castle, where she met Hardwicke Rawnsley, who encouraged her to write and helped her publish her first novel, is on the shores of Lake Windermere.

Her farm, Hill Top, overlooks the village of Near Sawrey, which is west of Lake Windermere.

And in Bowness-on-Windermere, the World of Beatrix Potter attraction delights children and adults alike.
