Which hotels made it onto TripAdvisor’s top ten list of the ‘most excellent’ large chains around? Check them out here—and then check in.
1. Preferred Hotels and Resorts
Of all the world’s largest hotel chains (chains with more than 500 properties), this global collection of distinctive boutique hotels earned the highest percentage of TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence among its properties, putting it atop the travel site’s list of the global “most excellent” large hotel chains around. Preferred Hotels and Resorts features a range of five-star properties, from the swank Sherry-Netherland at New York City’s Central Park to the lush oceanfront Peter Island Resort & Spa in the British Virgin Islands. Its top-notch membership program not only earns you points toward future visits but also offers instant benefits, including room upgrades, early check-in and late checkout, free WiFi, and member-only rates.
2. Hyatt Hotels
This massive hotel chain features stellar options to suit just about any traveler, from the luxury Park Hyatt hotels to the family- and business-friendly Hyatt Place and the distinctive, boutiquelike properties in Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. The chain’s FIND program helps you book unique experiences—from pasta making in Amalfi, Italy, to goat yoga in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it offers veterans and service members (and their immediate families) 10 to 15 percent off of rates for every booking.
3. Hilton Worldwide
Odds are you’ve stayed at one of Hilton’s 15 distinctive hotel chains, which include the ultra-posh Waldorf Astoria, with its legendary properties, and the family-friendly Hampton Hotels and Homewood Suites, which come with free breakfast. If you book through the Hilton website, you get perks like being able to pick your exact room, free WiFi, and digital check-in.
4. Premier Inn
This charming hotel chain has 750 properties around the United Kingdom (and a few now in the United Arab Emirates). Premier Inn’s king-sized Hypnos beds are the centerpiece of its “Good Night Guarantee,” which gives you your money back if you don’t get a good night’s sleep. The rooms feature a pair of pullout beds to sleep two kids, and kids under 16 stay free and get free breakfast.
5. Marriott International
Marriott has 30 different brands under its massive umbrella, including the grand Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis and the business-traveler and family-friendly SpringHill Suites and Fairfield Inn by Marriott. While the higher-end hotels focus on amazing experiences (including butler service and kids’ amenities, like child-sized robes and cookies and milk at turndown), other hotels in the chain offer free breakfast as part of their perks. All Marriott members get free WiFi and mobile check-in—while benefits like early check-in/late checkout and free gifts come at higher membership levels.
6. Best Western
This international hotel chain features 13 brands, including the brand-new chic Aiden and Sadie and several different Best Western brands. The chain was ranked first in J.D. Power & Associates’ 2017 survey for best breakfast and offers virtual-reality tours of all its North American hotels so you can try before you book.
7. Radisson Hotel
There are more than 1,400 hotels and eight brands under the Radisson umbrella, including the family favorite Country Inn & Suites. The Red by Radisson collection features local food and drink selections in the hotel, keyless entry for guests, and an app that makes it easy for you to get what you need, whether it’s ordering extra pillows from the staff or paying for a snack from the Grab & Go in the lobby.
8. La Quinta
This budget-friendly chain scores points for its comfy pillowtop beds and free hot breakfast—but pet-loving families know it as one of the few major chains to allow up to two pets per room to stay in the hotel. La Quinta was recently acquired by Wyndham, so its rewards program now works with Wyndham hotels, too.
9. InterContinental Hotels Group
Another megahotel chain, IHG offers a slew of hotel options, from the grand InterContinentals and boutique Kimptons to the classic Holiday Inns. Kimpton hotels offer free wine hours, pet-friendly amenities, and complimentary bike rentals, while Holiday Inns let kids stay and eat free.
10. Travelodge Hotels
This U.K.-based budget chain (not to be confused with the U.S. version) offers free stays—including breakfasts and dinners—for kids under 16, and stylish new SuperRooms with king-sized beds, rain showerheads, and Lavazza coffee machines—with prices as low as $37 a night.
