Lockdown travel ban: Holidays and flights refunds – what you are entitled to

Holiday hopes for November came to a bitter end last night as Boris Johnson made a statement outside of 10 Downing Street. His new rules will ban any form of UK trip besides work and any international travel from Thursday 5.

Over night stays and holidays away from your permanent home are strictly banned under these rules.

Travelling abroad outbound has been banned entirely, meaning even those with bookings will be unable to go ahead.

The Government said: “Avoid all non-essential travel by private or public transport.”

“Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed – including holidays in the UK and abroad.

“This includes staying in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with.

“There are specific exceptions, for example if you need to stay away from home (including in a second home) for work purposes.”

Many airlines have yet to respond fully to the news, having only received the information from the Government less than 24 hours ago.

However, a number have made statements.

Flights until November 5 will likely still be running, meaning that those with holidays booked before this date may choose to go.

Bear in mind that the homeward journey will most likely be affected.

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said: “Following the government’s sudden announcement today, easyJet will operate its planned schedule until Thursday and will be reviewing its flying programme over the lockdown period.

“It is likely that much of the UK touching schedule [ie flights to, from and within the UK] will be cancelled during lockdown with our planned flying set to resume in early December.

“We will advise customers who are booked to travel over the next month of their options with a view to assisting customers to return to the country in the coming days.”

There might be some ways to get your money back. Contacting the company you booked with is advisable.

Citizens Advice said: “If the company you booked with cancels your booking because of coronavirus, contact them.

“You have the right to a refund – or you can choose to rebook for another time.”

Accommodation such at hotels or package holidays should see refunds issued in two weeks.

If your flight is cancelled by the operator you should get a refund in a week.

However, if the flight still runs despite the fact you are not able to take it you are not entitled to a refund.

If you are unsuccessful contacting the company you booked with you can try through your card providers, especially if you paid with a credit card.

You may be able to claim on flights and holidays that cost over £100 and less than £30,000 thanks to Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

What about domestic holidays in particular?

The Government website reads: “Those currently on a domestic holiday will be allowed to finish their holidays.”

However, going on holiday domestically from November 5 until December 2 is banned.
