Face mask rules are largely mandatory when travelling with most airlines now. However, each airline sets out its own specific rules to do with the type of face mask or covering accepted, as well as how often they must be changed.

Here are the latest face mask rules for Jet2, TUI, easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways.

What are the face mask rules when flying with Jet2?

All passengers over the age of six travelling with Jet2 must wear a face mask. The rules apply to all travellers regardless of whether or not they have been vaccinated.

Face masks must be worn on flights, in airports and on transfer vehicles.

Jet2 also earns that some accommodation providers may require guests to wear face masks in certain areas.

The Jet2 website states: “You can’t board any of our flights unless you’re wearing a face mask.

“While travelling, you can only take off your mask when we ask to ID you at the boarding gate and to eat and drink. But remember, you must put it straight back on when you’ve finished.”

Passengers who are exempt from wearing a face mask must contact Jet2 ahead of their flight.

Jet2 explains: “We’ll ask you for specific medical evidence to confirm this, as we don’t accept downloaded exemption cards or lanyards as proof of exemption.”

Passengers who do not wear a face mask may not be allowed to board their flight.

What are the face mask rules when flying with TUI?

Passengers travelling with TUI must wear a face mask.

TUI’s website explains: “Everyone over six years old needs to wear a face mask on our flights, including while sleeping, unless you’re exempt due to a medical condition.

“You’ll need to wear a mask even if you’ve had your two vaccinations.

“Your face mask must cover your nose, mouth and chin – you can wear a face shield, but you’ll need to wear a face mask, too.”

Travellers should be sure to bring their own supply of masks, with enough to change every four hours.

Those who can not wear a face mask for health reasons must download a Government exemption card.

TUI also recommends wearing a face shield instead.

What are the face mask rules when flying with easyJet?

easyJet required all passengers over the age of six to wear a face mask.

This should also be worn around the airport.

easyJet asks passengers to wear specific face masks, with some coverings and scarves not accepted as an adequate mask.

easyJet states: “It’s important that your mask offers the best possible protection, so we’re no longer allowing scarves, face visors or masks with valves.

“Your mask needs to be FFP2 certified (or equivalent) and be surgical or cloth material.

“If it’s not suitable, you may be refused travel.”

Face masks must cover both the nose and mouth when flying.

Passengers who are exempt from wearing a face mask are asked to contact easyJet prior to travelling via the “mask exemption” form on the airline’s website.

The airline states: “We understand some people may not be able to wear a face mask, so if you’re exempt from wearing one, please let us know before you travel.

“Some destinations, like Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland, ask for a medical letter or certificate to prove exemption when flying to and from these countries. This may change, so please check the latest updates before travelling.”

What are the face mask rules when flying with Ryanair?

Ryanair required passengers to wear a face mask or covering both onboard flights and in the airport.

On its website, the Irish carrier states: “You must wear a face mask or covering in the airport and onboard your flight.

“Some countries such as Italy, require this to be a surgical face mask.

“If you are travelling to/from/within Austria or Germany, it must be a FFP2 face mask.”

Those who are exempt from wearing a face mask must hold a certificate attesting their medical condition.

Children under six do not need to wear a face mask.

What are the face mask rules when flying with British Airways?

British Airways requires passengers to wear face masks at all times, both in the airport and onboard flights.

The airline advises customers to make sure they are carrying enough masks to change “every four hours”.

The British Airways website explains: “You will be asked to remove your mask for any passport checks, but you’ll be advised when to do so by our colleagues.

“When you’re on board, you’re allowed to remove your face mask for a reasonable time to enable you to eat or drink.

“When you’re not consuming food or drink, your face mask must be placed back on and must cover your nose and mouth at all times.

“Please be aware that some airports or countries now mandate that you wear face masks so make sure you check your destination airport and country guidelines before you travel, so you can arrive prepared.”

Passengers who are exempt should carry “supporting documentation”.
