Is this the most stunning top deck of a cruise ship ever? Carnival releases new images of its Mardi Gras vessel, with one showing a roller coaster looping around an amazing water park

  • Carnival Cruise Line has released renderings of its new Mardi Gras vessel, which is set to launch in 2022
  • It will feature 6 themed zones including a French Quarter, one called Summer Landing and another called Lido
  • Biggest zone will be Grand Central and will feature spectacular three-deck-high floor-to-ceiling windows

The hype surrounding Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras vessel continues apace.

In December MailOnline Travel reported that it would feature the world’s first roller coaster on a ship. Now more features have been revealed, along with stunning new renderings.

They show a water park on the top deck (which the roller coaster loops around), an atrium with three-deck-high floor-to-ceiling windows and a ‘French Quarter’ that’s been designed to ‘capture the spirit of New Orleans’.

Florida-based Carnival says that the ship, which it describes as its most innovative yet, will feature six themed zones across 20 decks, with a spectacular atrium serving as the focal point.

This is where the aforementioned huge ceilings will be located.

The zone here will be called Grand Central and it will also be the home of the first-ever dedicated Punchliner Comedy Club, where guests can enjoy nightly shows.

The French Quarter zone will be lined with bars, music and restaurants that capture the spirit of the Big Easy.

It will be linked to a two-deck-high promenade leading to a traditional New Orleans jazz club with live entertainment and ‘refreshing hand-crafted drinks’.

At La Piazza on the middle of deck eight, Mardi Gras will honour Italy with authentic cuisine from two Mediterranean-themed restaurants and a bar.

In the Summer Landing zone, there will be a Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse restaurant serving smoked barbecue favourites and craft beers.

Outside, there will be a pool and whirlpools as well as ample spaces for lounging and hanging out, said Carnival.

A lido on deck 16 and 17, meanwhile, will have a number of varied poolside restaurants, similar to those on other Carnival ships, with more new concepts set to be announced at a later date.

The water park will be on the ‘Ultimate Playground’ on the top two decks.

Other Carnival ships have aqua parks but the firm says that this will be the largest and most elaborate in the fleet.

The Ultimate Playground is also where guests will find the Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, the first roller coaster at sea announced last month, where riders race along an 800-foot-long track achieving speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.

Mardi Gras will also incorporate features that are already popular on the rest of Carnival’s fleet such as Alchemy Bar, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, and the Serenity adult-only retreat.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said: ‘When our guests choose fun and book a vacation on Mardi Gras, they are going to find many firsts and exciting experiences, all enhanced by the fun atmosphere our great Carnival crew deliver on every cruise.

‘We’ve specifically designed Mardi Gras to invite everyone to create their own personalized fun vacation experience with options to suit every age, mood or taste.’

Construction on Mardi Gras, an XL-class ship, will start in 2020.

It will be the first in North America to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

It will be delivered in 2022 to mark the 50th anniversary of Carnival Cruise Line and will be based at Port Canaveral in Florida.
