‘I can pack everything I need for a three week holiday into one small rucksack’

A young travel blogger has dropped jaws after revealing that she can pack everything she needs for a three-week holiday in just a backpack.

Trying to stick to minimal luggage is an ongoing struggle for holidaymakers; some Brits stuff pillowcases full of clothes to avoid paying for an extra suitcase, while others opt for packing cubes to keep their items organised in a small bag.

However Brooke Schoenman, an American who lives in Australia, doesn’t need to worry about her cabin bag meeting the flight requirements.

The author of Her Packing List says that she manages to take everything she needs with her in a 12-litre backpack, which is roughly the size of a laptop rucksack.

Brooke first took her tiny luggage with her on a trip from Sydney to the US.

She spent three weeks touring Portland, Las Vegas, Chicago, San Francisco and the Amtrak train.

The blogger told CNN : “My mom just sort of laughed when she saw my bag and realised it was all my luggage.”

But, what does she take in her small bag?

Brooke showed that she used a packing cube filled with clothing that could be worn in multiple ways.

She also threw in fold-up shoes, a mini keyboard for her phone and small essential toiletries.

Her clothing is chosen with layers in mind so if the weather foes from hot to cold she is able to add or take away from her outfit.

Chargers and her passport are, of course, essentials.

She often includes some small pieces of jewellery, a hairbrush, medications and an umbrella.

Brooke likes packing light for a number of reasons, but especially as it makes it easy to move around.

She commented: “I felt like I had a lot more mental bandwidth on this trip when moving between destinations as I didn't have to worry about my luggage or think hard about what I was going to wear from my limited options.

"It's nice to be able to leave the airport or the train and head straight out with all your luggage and not feel weighed down in the process."

It also means you won’t lose your luggage on a flight as you take it into the cabin with you.

UK airports including Manchester and Heathrow saw mountains of baggage pile up in the terminal over summer, with many holidaymakers facing hours-long delays for their luggage, and some bags not making it to the plane at all.

Opting for a backpack means you don’t risk your suitcase being put in the hold when the cabin is full.

Brooke isn't the only person to offer up clever packing hacks.

Air hostess Kat Kamalani shared her own packing tips on TikTok, from keeping jewellery from getting tangled, to her love of packing cubes.

One of her tips also helps avoid an embarrassing airport moment.

She explained: “You’re gonna want to make sure your heaviest items are at the very bottom. This is going to help your luggage not tip over when you’re travelling.”

We’ve all had out suitcase fall over and smack us in the legs or make a loud noise in the middle of the airport, so this is a useful tip to avoid the cringe-inducing mistake!
