Hotel worker warns you should ‘turn off lights’ when you get to hotel room

A hotel worker has warned that you should always "turn off lights" when first arriving at a hotel room, if you want to avoid finding yourself in a gross situation.

Travel insider Halee, who has worked in the hotel industry for 15 years, revealed her go-to checklist in a recent TikTok video on @haleewithaflair urging holidaymakers to do some simple checks if they don't want to be bitten by bed bugs.

The short clip showed a couple waking up in a hotel room covered with bites.

She recommended: "Turn off lights, close any shades, and use the flashlight on your phone."

She explained that she always packs a torch before heading on holiday, and issued a stark warning to turn off the lights when you first arrive in a new place.

Using the torch, you should then check under the bed, in any nooks and crannies, as well as fabrics like curtains, with Halee warning that the creatures like "corners and the creases" of bedding and linen.

She explained: "The reason you should check your bed with the lights off is because bed bugs are actually nocturnal so they’re more likely to be out and about looking for their prey."

Other checks to make include looking for any blood spots on fabrics, as well as inspecting the mini fridge, and an ironing board if there is one.

Oh, and don't forget to make the checks before you unpack your bags – or you could risk bed bugs crawling into your luggage.

In fact, one expert has previously suggested that you should place your bags in the bathroom while you check for bed bugs, and before you start unpacking.

That’s because tiled lavatories are the least likely to have bed bug infestations as there are few fabrics like carpet for them to hide in.
