Holidays: Top staycations spots in the UK & how to book and bag deals in the New Year

Holidays: Mike Gooley gives advice on booking travel in 2021

Holidays have never been more sorely needed but so hard to come by as right now. The country has been plunged into coronavirus misery for what feels like a lifetime and a getaway is what the doctor ordered for many Britons. One benefit of not being able to do much else at this time is that there’s plenty of opportunity to plan and organise for the future, including 2021 holidays.

Where should you go and how is best to book a UK holiday next year? turned to Caroline Burns, a travel expert from holiday rental search engine HomeToGo to find out her travel advice.

Recent HomeToGo data unearthed where Britons are most itching to go on a staycation.

Interestingly, the top search over the last week has been London.

However, others were more traditional staycation destinations.

Most desired destinations in England

1. Greater London

2. Cornwall

3. Devon

4. Cumbria

5. Kent

6. Norfolk

7. Dorset

8. Hampshire

9. Suffolk

10. North Yorkshire

“Looking at HomeToGo’s year-over-year search trends, we are seeing less demand for holiday rentals in urban areas like London and more demand for stays in rural regions like Cornwall (up 58 percent), Dorset (up 114 percent), or Hampshire (up 65 percent) compared to the pre-festive period last year,” said Burns.

“In these destinations, travellers can expect to find wonderful seaside homes or cottages to safely socially distance themselves.”

So what’s the best way to go about selecting a holiday rental?

Burns advises handpicking your amenities and making the most of filters on booking websites.

“Besides picking a rental by location, price and dates, many searches also include a massive range of amenities to customise your stay,” said Burns.

“Really think of it as a mini holiday and take the opportunity to find a rental that you will get excited about.

“To balance all of the time inside, filter your search by homes that include a garden, terrace or balcony to make sure you can get fresh air and a little bit of Vitamin D every day.

“For a touch of luxury, scout out homes that come with a fireplace, hot tub or sauna.”

It’s also vital you make sure your booking can be flexible, should the worst happen.

“If this year has taught us anything, it’s that plans change,” said Burns.

“Opt for rentals that have a free cancellation policy in case you need to delay your stay.

“It doesn’t hurt to check availability with your host should you want to extend your staycation!”
