EasyJet passengers’ luggage sent to wrong airports in baggage mix-up

EasyJet passengers flying from Gibraltar landed to find that their baggage had been sent to the wrong airports.

The mix-up meant that luggage bound for London Gatwick and Manchester airports was inadvertently swapped at Gibraltar International Airport.

Around 150 bags were flown to the wrong destinations, reports local media GBC News – leaving passengers to discover the error when they touched down.

Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo confirmed the incident to local station Radio Gibraltar, GBC said.

It’s understood that the airport is investigating the incident.

Passengers took to social media to express their anger about the situation.

Passenger Penelope Louise tweeted that she was told it would take three days at least for her luggage to be returned.

One passenger flying to Gatwick told GBC News that her daughter’s medication for a rare condition was packed in her suitcase, which ended up in Manchester.

An easyJet spokesperson said: “We are aware that due to a loading error, hold bags intended for the flight to Manchester were incorrectly loaded on to the Gatwick flight and the Gatwick bags were loaded on to the Manchester flight.

“We are investigating the error with our baggage handlers and we would like to apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused. We have been working to reunite passengers with their bags today.”

The Independent has asked Gibraltar airport for comment.
