Best value city breaks for January that need to be on your radar

The January blues can be all-too real; the festive period is over, winter is in full swing, and most of us are trying to keep to those pesky new year's resolutions.

However, it's also why January can be a great time to go on a city break, as you won't face the Christmas crowds and there are bargains to be had.

In fact, research by Vouchercloud has revealed that if you opt for a January city break compared to December, you could save an average of 32.81 per cent.

Of course December prices can get hiked up especially for Europe's best Christmas markets , which could explain the price difference, but January does offer up some great value breaks.

To give you a helping hand, Vouchercloud has unveiled the best value breaks for January 2020, where you can get the biggest post-Christmas discounts for holidays with flights and hotel stays.

We take a look at the top five city breaks that need to be on your radar – but you can also check out the full list of destinations below…

1. Podgorica, Montenegro

Topping the list is Podgorica, the capital city of Montenegro, which boasts an average price of £32.51pp per night in January – a whopping 68.44 per cent price drop compared to December.

In January the city boasts average daily temperatures of 11 degrees, so it's not too cold to be out and about exploring (but do pack layers – it is winter after all!).

Although Podgorica is renowned for heaps of outdoor activities and its very own 'Niagara Falls', there are plenty of indoor hotspots too from the Centre of Contemporary Art to the various museums – and the incredible Church Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is a must-visit.

The Old Town is also well worth leaving space on the itinerary for, if only to wander through the picturesque streets and discover all the local boutiques and restaurants tucked away.

2. Vilnius, Lithuania

Average price per person: £37.98 a night

Vilnius is already hailed as one of the cheapest European city breaks so it's no surprise that the Lithuanian capital has been revealed as a great value hotspot in January.

There's heaps to explore from the fairytale-esque Trakai Island Castle to the impressive 16th century Gate of Dawn, as well as the Old Town with its cosy cafés and historic architecture.

The best part is that some of the top attractions such as the Church of St Anne are free, while the museums and art galleries often have entrance fees that work out at less than £3pp.

3. Athens, Greece

Average price per person: £50.27 a night

Yes, the weather will be hot and sunny if you head in the summer, while in January you could face some rain.

But if you're not fussed about the heat, winter can be ideal for visiting Athens; there are very few tourists, meaning the museums and sites tend to be fairly empty.

Plus, with average temperatures around 13 degrees, it won't be so freezing that you can't go out and explore.
