Eldora ski area opened Friday, Purgatory confirmed it will open on Saturday and Copper Mountain is set to open on Monday, but another resort has postponed its opening due to challenging snowmaking conditions.
Beaver Creek, which was scheduled to open next Wednesday, announced an indefinite postponement on Friday. Steamboat had targeted an opening date of Saturday but announced on Tuesday that it was postponing its opening by one week. Telluride also postponed its opening from Thanksgiving to Dec. 3.
Ski areas have experienced difficult snowmaking conditions this fall because warm temperatures have limited the number of hours snow guns can operate.
“We are keeping our eyes on the (weather) forecast and will issue an update on our new target opening day soon,” Beaver Creek spokeswoman Rachel Levitsky wrote in an email. “Our operations teams are monitoring the weather minute-by-minute and our expert snowmakers will continue to make snow in our base area at every opportunity.”
Areas that are open have only a small fraction of their terrain available for skiing and riding. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Arapahoe Basin: four of 147 trails
- Breckenridge: two of 87 trails
- Eldora: three of 61 trails
- Keystone: six of 131 trails
- Loveland: five of 94 trails
- Vail: five of 136 trails
- Winter Park: two of 161 trails
- Wolf Creek: reports that 10% of its terrain is open
