A 7-hour Flight From Boston to L.A. Became a 30-hour 'Nightmare'

Flying from coast to coast can be a brutal journey, but for travelers on a recent flight from Boston to Los Angeles, it became a nightmare.

Passengers on Alaska Airlines Flight 1367 from Boston Logan International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport were only meant to spend about seven hours in the air, but their coast-to-coast trek ended up taking 30 hours in total, Boston 25 News reported.

The passengers boarded their original flight on Saturday evening at Boston Logan, just after 6 p.m. and, unfortunately, their flight was already off to a poor start, WCVB reported. According to Boston 25, the plane sat for two hours before take off.

After 90 minutes people in the cabin began to smell an “electrical” type of smoke smell. “Like wires burning,” passenger Tiffany Devereaux told Boston 25. The electrical issues forced the plane crew to make an emergency landing in Buffalo, New York.

Once the plane landed in New York, passengers then had to wait in the Buffalo/Niagara International Airport for a new plane. According to Boston 25, some passengers claimed they did not receive any food while waiting, nor a place to sleep. It wasn’t until Sunday morning around 4 a.m. that passengers were able to board a new flight, which took them back to Boston so they could start their journey all over again, according to WCVB.

Sadly, the second flight from Boston was also plagued with issues. Passengers told Boston 25 that some luggage did not make it on the second flight from Boston, leaving dozens of people trying to sort out getting their lost belongings with the airline. The flight arrived late Sunday night, WCVB reported.

A spokesperson for Alaska Airlines extended the company’s apologies, saying to Boston 25, “We clearly failed them at several points and we deeply regret the experience that left them stranded for hours without support or communication. That experience is not the Alaska way and does not reflect our values.”

An investigation is currently underway as to what caused the ordeal.
