Codeshare agreements announced Tuesday would give United customers greater access to southern Africa and American customers increased access to India.
United’s agreement with South Africa-based Airlink would open United flyers to Airlink’s 40-plus destinations. It would also augment United’s existing partnership with fellow Star Alliance member South African Airways, which returned to the skies last week after an ownership change and bankruptcy reorganization.

The agreement, which is subject to regulatory approvals, comes as United prepares to resume Newark-Cape Town service on Dec. 1 and on the heels of its launch of Newark-Johannesburg service last June.
American’s codeshare agreement is with IndiGo, India’s largest carrier as measured by passengers carried.
The partnership, which is also subject to regulatory approval, would have American placing its code on 29 IndiGo routes out of Delhi and Bangalore. The carriers are targeting next month for the start of the codeshares, ahead of American’s launch of JFK-Delhi service on Oct. 31 and Seattle-Bangalore on Jan. 4.
American Flagship business-class flyers will have access to IndiGo’s lounges in Delhi and Bangalore.
