Careem Bike service to launch 'soon' in Dubai, says managing director

Phase 1 will include 80 stations with 800 bikes across population hotspots in Dubai

Dubai ride-hailing and delivery app Careem will launch its bike service “soon” once a start date has been agreed with the emirate’s transport regulator, the company’s managing director said in an interview on Wednesday.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in November signed a contract with Careem to operate 3,500 bicycles across 350 smart docking stations in the emirate.

“The first phase will include 80 stations, 800 bikes across certain communities, some of the largest we are aware off: Dubai Marina, JLT, Media City, Barsha, Deira, Makhool, Karama, Downtown, among the largest,” Bassel Al Nahlaoui, managing director for the Gulf and Pakistan at Careem, said in an interview with Dubai Eye’s Business Breakfast radio show.

“We don’t have a final date for the launch, we are going to figure that out with the RTA soon,” he added.

Al Nahlaoui said the pedal-assisted bikes would be “a first of the kind in the region”.

“It is not fully electric, but it is pedal-assisted where you pedal a little bit and then it picks up speed and makes it much less effort for you to pedal long distances,” he said.
