Boeing has issued new guidance to airlines in relation to the crash of a Lion Air 737 Max aircraft last week that killed 189.
The Operation Manual Bulletin, which Boeing issue Tuesday evening, directs airlines to consult existing flight crew procedures when they experience erroneous inputs from angle-of-attack (AOA) sensors.
Indonesian investigators have said that the doomed Lion Air flight 610 received erroneous input from an AOA sensor.
“The investigation into Lion Air flight 610 is ongoing and Boeing continues to cooperate fully and provide technical assistance at the request and under the direction of government authorities investigating the accident,” Boeing said in a statement.
The aerospace giant hasn’t made the bulletin itself public, having provided it only to airlines.
But according to Bloomberg, Boeing says that the problem with the sensor only occurs when an aircraft’s autopilot is switched off. Boeing said that when a 737 Max AOA sensor malfunctions, it can provide false readings the causes the plane to angle downward, nose first.
