Alaska Airlines makes large commitment to the Boeing 737 Max: Travel Weekly

Alaska Airlines has exercised an option for the purchase of 52 Boeing 737 Max aircraft between 2024 and 2027.

The planes will augment the 43 Max jets that Alaska plans to receive by the end of next year. The airline is phasing out the last of the Airbus A320s that Alaska inherited from Virgin America when the airlines merged in 2016.

Alaska also said it laid the groundwork for long-term expansion by securing the rights for 105 more Max planes through 2030, which could leave it with more than 250 Max-series aircraft by that time. Alaska currently operates 35 Boeing 737 Max-9 planes.

It is the largest commitment for future aircraft in Alaska Airlines’ history, said the airline.

“This investment secures aircraft to optimize our growth through the next decade, which we know will be a formidable competitive advantage,” CEO Ben Minicucci said in a prepared remark.

Alaska’s present fleet includes 232 narrowbody jets and 89 regional aircraft. The mainline planes are divided between 201 Boeing planes and 31 Airbus planes.
