Wyndham Grand Mirabello Bay Hotel: Fab five-star Crete treat

The five-star Wyndham Grand boasts a prime spot on the waterfront of the spectacular Mirabello Bay. Surrounded by the verdant hillsides of Lassithi, the resort has its own beaches, one pebble, one sandy and is close to the pretty harbour town of Agios Nikolaos.

Chilled-out days around its array of seawater pools give way to laid-back nights here. This hotel has a unique and varied restaurant and bar scene with live shows, children’s entertainment as well as evening beach parties.

Starting life as Mirabello Beach and Village Resort in 1971, it was taken over by Wyndham last year and given a modern makeover.

The 311 newly renovated, deluxe bedrooms and bungalows, all with sitting areas, feature sleek and modern decor, marble bathrooms and Cretan stone balconies. The luxury maisonettes have dark wooden staircases that lead up to a second bedroom and bathroom.

Guests in these rooms have exclusive access to shared swim-up pools and sun loungers with sweeping views of the bay.

Its five elegant restaurants are all distinctive in style but share a common focus on fresh, local ingredients.

The breezy Sirens main restaurant offers lavish Greek and Mediterranean buffets with sea and mountain views from its shady terrace.

Elia (the Greek word for olive) serves an a la carte menu featuring Cretan delights such as grilled octopus and sun-soaked tomatoes with feta. Tavern-style Kafenion is the place for traditional mezes and to sample the potent Greek tipples of ouzo and raki.

There’s also the Grill House Fish & Meat Barbecue on the seafront, as well as a selection of bars. The Mermaid Yacht Beach Club, right at the water’s edge, is perfect for cocktails at sunset.

There are four outdoor seawater pools, including two overlooking the sea and a freshwater indoor pool in the hotel spa.

There are also three tennis courts, a sandy volleyball area, a fully equipped fitness studio and daily Pilates classes on the beach.

Boats are moored down at the harbour for guests to enjoy fishing trips and cruises around the bay (prices on request). Little ones can have fun at the hotel’s kids’ club, playground, as well as at their own pool, while adults relax on the free sun loungers around the beach.

The Aegeo Spa is a haven of tranquillity and offers a wide range of relaxing and therapeutic treatments in eight private rooms. Unwind with an 80-minute Ancient Greek Experience including a massage and a Dead Sea mud mask, €95. There’s also a hammam (Turkish bath), tea lounge, sauna and Jacuzzi.

Take a trip to the fascinating island of Spinalonga (catch the 20-minute ferry from Plaka, a short drive from the hotel). Dubbed the “Island of Tears” it was used as a leper colony until 1957 and is the subject of Victoria Hislop’s incredibly moving novel, The Island.

Afterwards, enjoy a stroll around the cobbled streets of Plaka and browse the shops for trinkets. At the Cretan Oil Farm, next to the hotel, visitors can learn the art of cheese-making or take a class in how to make classic Greek dishes such as rice-stuffed vine leaves.

Rooms at the Wyndham Grand Mirabello Bay Hotel start at £185 per night, based on two sharing on B&B.
