Cancun continues to be the No. 1 tourist destination in Mexico. From January to August 2021, Cancun saw 3.9 million air arrivals, an increase of 77.8% over 2020. As pandemic travel restrictions continue to ease around the world, 2022 is expected to be one of the best years on record for Mexico and Cancun. In fact, research from ForwardKeys and TripAdvisor show that Cancun is one of the top 10 most popular destinations in the world, and Tulum is one of the top 10 trending destinations.

Tulum recently welcomed the new Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya Resort, which has 349 rooms, a spa, five pools and 11 restaurants. Still to come in Tulum will be the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort, with 735 rooms, a spa, 13 restaurants and bars and an area for families.
The Kanai development on the Riviera Maya has been a master-planned community to watch. Now open is the new Etereo, Auberge Resorts Collection, which features 75 oceanfront guest houses. Each room has views of both the mangroves and the ocean through floor-to-ceiling windows. The resort also sits perched on a stretch of white-sand beach and has direct access to one of the largest coral reefs in the region.
Later this year, Kanai will welcome the Riviera Maya Edition at Kanai, featuring 180 guestrooms and suites, a restaurant, pool bar, beach club, spa and a deck for events. The final project for Kanai will be a St. Regis resort that is also expected to debut in 2022.
Still to come in Playa del Carmen will be the Secrets Moxche Playa del Carmen Resort, slated to open in April with 683 suites. AMResorts will also open the Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort & Spa in June. This resort will have 154 Preferred Club Suites, a spa and an adults-only option.
Cancun’s Playa Mujeres will see the opening of a Paradisus resort early this year, though the exact date has yet to be confirmed. The Paradisus Playa Mujeres will have views of the gardens, the marina and the sea. It will feature a Greg Norman-designed golf course, 12 restaurants and bars and the Reserve VIP upgrade option.
The destination will not lose any momentum as the year goes on, either. Coming in September, the Waldorf Astoria Cancun Resort will open on 100 acres featuring a Waldorf Astoria Spa, 24-hour room service and 55,000 square feet of event space. The resort will also be pet friendly.
