Little Women has very apt filming locations including Louisa May Alcott’s home

Little Women is back on the big screen thanks to Greta Gerwig's new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott 's iconic novel.

The new film, released in December 2019, stars Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen as Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth respectively. Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothee Chalamet also star in the adaptation.

The film was shot in Massachusetts, USA, and boasts some seriously fitting locations – including the house where Louisa May Alcott lived and wrote the world-famous book.

Film buffs will be delighted to find out that plenty of the locations are actually open to the public to visit, so you can follow in the cast and crew's footsteps – and soak in the history at the same time.

For a start Orchard House , where Louisa May Alcott wrote the novel, was used as inspiration for the March house. In fact, a replica of Orchard House served as the filming location, as the original building is a tourist attraction – you can take guided tours .

It wasn't the only historic home to take on a starring role in the film. The William Hickling Prescott House doubled up as the Moffat House where Meg makes her society debut, while the Fruitlands Museum served as Meg's house. Both destinations are open to the public.

Other highlights include the Fairmont Copley Plaza , whose opulent ballroom made for a beautiful backdrop for the New Year's Eve party scenes, while the Lyman Estate in Waltham provided the picturesque verandah where Jo and Laurie have a dance.

General scenes were also filmed on Gibbet Hill in Groton , as well as the Thayer Estate (the latter went on sale after filming).

Aunt March's grandiose home was actually the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton .

Meanwhile, although plenty of the action is set in Paris, the cast and crew didn't actually head to the City of Lights.

Instead, various hotspots in Massachusetts were used such as the Arnold Arboterum , which doubled up as a Parisian park, while the Grand House on Castle Hill served as the backdrop to larger group scenes.

Paris isn't the only city to have been recreated in the US state. Jo's time in New York isn't actually in New York. Instead, the Gibson House Museum was transformed to become her apartment, while the Emerson Colonial Theatre features in the scene where she heads to catch a theatre show.

Appleton Street in Lawrence was used to recreate some of the street scenes in New York.

Other locations of note include Harvard Town Hall , Stoughton Train Station and the Crane Estate which were used for general filming, while Crane Beach was where the sisters headed to – you guessed it – the beach.
