HTA preparing to name new CEO and director

The tenure of Hawaii Tourism Authority president and CEO George D. Szigeti ended at the close of October, and a new director of the agency is expected to be named before year’s end.

Szigeti’s contract ran through 2020, but at the end of June the HTA board of directors voted unanimously to end his term effective Oct. 31. Szigeti, who took over the agency in May 2015, stayed on as the HTA conducted its search for his successor and to see through plans and execution of the Global Tourism Summit held in Honolulu at the start of October.

“I am proud of the work HTA has accomplished since coming onboard and how HTA has contributed to the prosperity of our state’s largest industry and leading provider of jobs,” Szigeti said in a statement released in his final days in the position.

In July, board chairman Rick Fried said the board appreciated Szigeti’s work with the agency but felt it was time for a “new direction.” Szigeti had recently struggled with a contentious relationship with the state legislature, which controls HTA’s budget.
