Third of travellers from Saudi Arabia favour wellness and spa holidays

Almost 40 percent of travellers from Saudi Arabia prefer wellness and spa holidays abroad, as opposed to other travel experiences, compared to a global average of 18%, according to a YouGov survey.

The study, commissioned by global airport membership program Priority Pass, reviewed over 10,000 respondents from nine countries, including 1,000 from Saudi Arabia. It also found that Saudi Arabian travellers spend an average of $1,357 (SAR5,090) a year on holidays.

Russian travellers came at a close second with 33% favouring wellness holidays.

In addition, 29% of travellers from Saudi Arabia ranked cultural holidays as their second favourite trip type, followed by solo holidays, staycations, sport trips and oversea city breaks and weekend getaways.

Saudi Arabian respondents also ranked travel among their five preferred areas of spending, ahead of luxury item purchases, which ranked in seventh place.

A report by the World Bank showed Saudi Arabia accounted for the highest level of spending on tourism overseas of all GCC countries, with a total of $21.1 billion in 2014.
