Europe remains Brits’ top destination of choice for holidays in 2019 and 2020

Europe remains Brits' top destination of choice for holidays, a new report by travel association ABTA has revealed.

Despite uncertainty around Brexit plans and what it could mean for holidaymakers, the continent proved to be the number one choice for Brits travelling abroad with 84 per cent of UK holidaymakers having visited in the past 12 months.

In fact, the 2019 ABTA Travel Report showed that four of the five top countries which people visited in the past year are in Europe – Spain, France, Italy and Germany.

Spain holds its reign as the most popular holiday destination for Brits, with more than a third taking a trip there this year. This doesn't come as a huge surprise considering the plethora of cheap Spain holidays on offer.

Although bookings to Spain for summer 2019 were slightly down on last year, it still shows no sign of getting knocked off the top spot, as the report revealed that out of Brits planning trips abroad next year, Spain was once again proving the top choice.

The USA came second as the country Brits planned to visit in 2020, followed by France.

Although hotspots abroad are still top of the list, that's not to say a staycation won't be on the cards.

In fact, over half of Brits surveyed said they intended to travel in the UK next year.

That comes after 72 per cent of people took a UK holiday in the last 12 months, a small growth compared to the previous year.
