Couple become first to stay the night at the Louvre museum in centuries

A young couple from Newcastle became the first people to stay overnight at the Louvre Museum in centuries.

Arts student Daniela was the winner of Airbnb's competition which offered a night at the Parisian landmark, after she impressed judges with a fun answer as to why she would be the Mona Lisa's perfect guest.

Joined by boyfriend Adam, the pair were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience which included a private after-hours tour of the museum with an art historian – a privilege which has previously been extended to the likes of Barack Obama , Beyoncé and Jay-Z .

Other highlights included a Renaissance inspired aperitif, an extravagant feast and even an intimate acoustic concert in Napoleon III’s lavish Apartments.

To top it all off, they stayed in a specially created canvas tent – inside the Louvre's iconic glass pyramid.

Daniela, who was chosen out of over 182,000 applicants, said: "It was an unexpected and unbelievable experience. I respect art because of what I study, but being able to experience it in such a way granted me the space to appreciate everything individually, which actually makes a huge difference.

"I also recognise the huge privilege that I had in attending. I got a fantastic sleep! It was a lot to take in through the evening, so I fell asleep within seconds!"

The overnight stay is the first of a host of exceptional Experiences which Airbnb will be offering as part of a partnership with the museum.

Kicking off this month and lasting until the end of the year, there will be a series of exciting events from intimate concerts to special stays and events which will be bookable on the Airbnb platform.

It's proving an exciting year for the Louvre, which revealed it had a record-breaking number of visitors. In fact, Beyoncé and Jay-Z played a role in its success!
