SilkAir increases services from Darwin

SilkAir today celebrated the introduction of seven-times weekly services from Darwin to Singapore, with the number of direct flights increasing from the current six-times weekly.

The additional service represents an increase of almost 17% in the number of seats per week on the route and continues the SIA Group’s strategy to invest and expand its operations in Australia.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Mr Philip Goh, said the increase in services will offer even greater choice for customers in the Northern Territory.

“This new service will provide Territorians with even greater access to our global network, as well as providing an additional choice for those looking to travel directly to Singapore,” Mr Goh said.

“The increase also provides additional options for international visitors looking to travel to the Northern Territory to explore the magnificent wonders of this very special part of the world and reinforces our commitment to Darwin and Northern Australia.

“We’ve seen steadily rising demand for flights to and from Darwin since we introduced services in 2012, and we are thankful for the continued support of our partners, the travel trade, and our loyal customers.”

The Northern Territory has experienced a 4.2% year-on-year growth in international visitors in the year ending March 2019.

Northern Territory Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, The Hon. Lauren Moss MLA said through Turbocharging Tourism the Territory Labor Government was strengthening relationships with airline partners to improve connectivity between the Territory and destinations both interstate and overseas.

“The additional SilkAir flight is excellent news and a show of confidence in the Territory,” Ms Moss said.

“Having a daily service makes it significantly easier for international visitors to plan their Territory holiday and encourages more people to use Darwin as a gateway for their Australian travel. It also means more choice for Territorians travelling for work and leisure.

“More flights, means more passengers, which will help support and create jobs in our valuable tourism industry.”

Since launching flights to Darwin in 2012, SilkAir has grown their operations from four-times weekly to seven-times weekly delivering more options and connections to customers looking to travel to Darwin, or to Singapore and beyond.

CEO NT Airports, Ian Kew said Darwin Airport was delighted to see the expansion of SilkAir operations with the addition of a seventh weekly service on the Darwin to Singapore route.

“The increased capacity provides more options for international visitors to Darwin and the Top End, as well as offering more choice in departure days and times to Territorians travelling to Singapore and beyond,” Mr Kew said.

“Darwin International Airport is excited to be celebrating SilkAir’s seven years of operations to Darwin with the addition of this service demonstrating their ongoing commitment to our region.  We thank them for their loyalty and support and look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come.”

An event was held at Darwin International Airport this morning, with guests enjoying an Aboriginal fusion performance from NT Dance Company and celebratory cake.

The increase in services to Darwin continues SilkAir’s investment in Northern Australia, following the recent increase to daily services between Cairns and Singapore.
