Hotel Windsor Nice UFO Festival

Now that the summer hordes are back home, the city of Nice once again belongs to the resident and traveller rather than the tourist. Despite its carefree atmosphere, Nice is one of France’s most urbane cities, with many cultural events taking place throughout the year to complement the excellent museums and art galleries that add an air of sophistication to the salt air of the Mediterranean Sea. The active cultural calendar is usually overshadowed by the attention accorded the beaches, sunshine, and scenery of the French Riviera; discovering all that this charming city has to offer outside the peak season is a great pleasure.

One of the most unusual festivals in Nice this year is the OVNi Festival, taking place from 22 November to 1 December. OVNI means UFO in French, though the festival’s name is an abbreviation for Objectif Vidéo Nice, a series of installations in venues around the city showcasing video art. One of those venues is the superb Hotel Windsor, an art hotel where rooms have been decorated by different artists in creative ways. Even the lift is a work of art, decorated with images of a rocket ship and endowed with an audio track that counts down the seconds until blastoff. Odile Payen-Redolfi, the venerable manager of Hotel Windsor, has been instrumental in increasing awareness of the importance of contemporary artforms in everyday life and takes great pride in furthering that cause by way of intriguing displays of creativity around the city of Nice as well as in her own establishment. During the dates 29 November to 1 December, Hotel Windsor will host the Salon Camera Camera, a special exhibition of ‘artistic hospitality’ that adds a new dimension to the role of hotels in the promotion of art and culture.

Hotel Windsor is one of Nice’s hotel gems anytime of year. Located in a small but imposing building with a luxuriant private garden and swimming pool―very rare in the city centre―Hotel Windsor combines stylish interiors with friendly service to provide an ideal base for guests to explore the charms of the city. Rooms with classic French balconies facing the garden are highly coveted, though being on a sidestreet rather than a main avenue means that all the rooms at the hotel are quiet. Hotel Windsor is only two short blocks from the sea, yet seems far away from the busyness of the Promenade des Anglais while still being conveniently located to visit the sights and attractions of Nice. The splendid Museum of Fine Arts, housed in a beautiful Belle Époque villa, is an easy walk away. The Masséna Museum, in another glorious villa, is just around the corner. The Old Town, a bit further east along the Promenade, is also within reasonable walking distance. As is the railway station, which makes Hotel Windsor that much more convenient for guests travelling by train. The airport is easily reached by private transfer or public bus. Who knows, maybe during the OVNi Festival it will even be possible to arrange private transfers by UFO.
