Inside the cruise ship with a wave machine, bumper cars and robot bartenders

Long gone are the days when cruise ship entertainment meant a pool and occasional shows.

Nowadays, cruise ships have upped the stakes with heaps of thrills and adventures for passengers.

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas is one of the ships leading the charge, with everything thrill-seekers could want from a skydive simulator to bumper cars and a rock climbing wall.

The best part is that for 2020 it will be sailing from Southampton, so Brits can start their holiday immediately without the hassle of flying to a homeport – which means even more time to make the most of the plethora of activities.

We take a look at everything you need to know about the mega cruise ship including the best activities and where to indulge in some R&R, as well as the glamorous itineraries on offer.

Check out our guide below…

For the thrill-seekers

If flopping down by a pool isn't your thing, then Anthem of the Seas could just be your ideal ship.

There's heaps to explore whether you want to try your hand at flying in the skydiving simulator, take on the waves on FlowRider, or take in the views from the top of the rock climbing wall.

Speaking of views, the ship even has a viewing pod that means you can take in the ocean panoramics from 300ft high!

Back on deck you can have a go on the bumper cars, or even learn acrobatic skills at Circus School…

For rest and relaxation

While Anthem of the Seas offers up a wide array of adventures, it also caters to those who do want to indulge in a bit of pampering.

There's the top deck pool if you want to soak up the rays, while the luxurious spa, fitness centre and adults-only Solarium never fail to be a hit.

As for the evenings, it's well worth heading to the theatre post-dinner to catch one of the dazzling West End style shows.

Then of course there's no better place to get some peace and quiet than your cabin, and Anthem of the Seas offers up plenty of elegant staterooms.

Think plenty of space, comfortable beds, ensuite bathrooms and all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

For something extra special, the ship's suites offer an extra dose of luxury with their own living room areas, ocean views and plenty of exclusive benefits. (The Royal Loft suite  comes with its private whirlpool!).

The food and drink

Whether you're after fine dining amidst a swanky setting, want to discover international cuisines or tuck into hearty burgers and chips, Anthem of the Seas really does have something for everyone thanks to the 14 restaurants on board.

There's Izumi where you can tickle your taste buds with fresh sushi and sashimi, Jamie's Italian where you can indulge with rustic Italian fare or Johnny's Rockets with seriously good burgers and fries.

Another highlight includes Wonderland, where chefs invite you to wander down the rabbit hole to discover whimsical dishes unlike any other.

As for those post-dinner tipples? The ship boasts plenty of swish lounges, but one not to miss is the bar where robots act as the bartenders and whip up your drinks for you!
