Norwegian Cruise Line has clarified its rules on portable fans. Many cruise guests try to bring portable fans onboard.
While Norwegian Cruise Line recently added fans to its banned item list, it has now clarified the rules on the popular item.
The original rule said that “all types of fans including handheld, battery operated and electric” were banned onboard.
However, it has now updated the rule to say that “all types of fans (are banned) with the exception of small electrical and battery-operated fans”.
It added: “Please note, these fans are subject to confiscation by the ship’s security team for inspection and approval.”
Fans come in a range of sizes and the guidelines don’t specify what size a fan would need to be classified as ‘small’.
Portable fans have become a commonly packed item as summer temperatures can soar as high as 40 degrees in Europe.
Fans will be inspected to check if the cord and casings are secure and any larger items could be confiscated.
Some guests were very upset at the initial ban as fans are considered essential to some cruise guests.

Reddit user ‘CanLii’ said: “The rooms are usually not hot but I also sleep with a fan for the moving air and white noise. I’ve packed small versions that plug into the wall without issue.”
Another guest ‘MJlikestocruise’ said they recommended asking the room steward for a fan to use in hot weather.
Some guests like to sleep with a fan on for the white noise or they use it to circulate air in the cabin.
Guests could contact customer services before their cruise to see if their fan will be allowed onboard.
Other guests use a portable fan to help dry wet swimming costumes or wet clothes in their cabin.
However, if fans are banned, guests could see if their room has a clothes line in the bathroom or use the ship’s laundry service.
Candles are also banned on the majority of cruise ships. This is because they are considered to be a fire risk.
If guests do want to create a romantic atmosphere in their room, they could bring a battery powered candle.
Restaurants and bars onboard may have candles but these will be closely monitored by the ship’s crew.
Guests will also need to check the rules on fresh food before taking snacks off the boat in their holiday destination.
Many countries have strict rules on transporting food as fresh items could disrupt the country’s ecosystem.
Cruise passengers could be fined or banned from entry if they try to take a prohibited item across the border.
